Sarah Brannon is an American artist born in 1995 in Memphis, Tennessee. After growing up in Memphis, she left to pursue a career as a fashion model in 2014 in New York City. After several years of travel, she picked up painting in Paris during the winter of 2019. Shortly thereafter, she found herself in Mississippi and through an exploration of different mediums, arrived at an interest in the concept of foundation in utilizing different household items such as saw blades, trowels, and house paint. In the spring of 2021, she had her first solo show titled Schmétterling, showcasing her work focusing on the evolutionary process of recovery from addiction. Some primary themes expressed through her work focus on the journey and process of building a foundation of self, as well as the rawer use of the body as a tool, seen moreover as body prints in the artist’s first series. She is deeply inspired by her relationships with others, the idea and middle ground of separation and connection. Exploring the sense of duality, the “give and take” nature of relationships, Brannon uses art as a way to become even more familiar with the complexity of emotions and the everyday human experience as well as the concept of evolution through death, integration, and rebirth. Currently, Brannon and her practice are based in Brooklyn, New York.

Each painting represents a timestamp of the journey of recovery, showing an important transition moment forming the whole evolutionary process. Through the use of the body as a paintbrush, it was necessary to express the raw emotions that may come up during one’s passage. Utilizing household items such as tools and house paint, there was a focus on building of a foundation that one may need to take that next step out. Each piece brings one back to the feeling of delicacy yet strength in letting go. Geometric shapes and gridding are meant to show placement or patterns that one strives to break. The totality of the works focuses upon acceptance, integration of the self, and healing by cultivating a sense of balance.
